New Look Stunnerz A Success!

The change in format for the eighth Stunnerz ‘N’ Runnerz due to tougher legislation and higher costs associated with road racing to a 5K forest trail course through the new venue of Drum Manor Forest Park just outside Cookstown proved a success with almost 300 entrants by race start. Although the morning made a promising start, light rain began to fall on the over 200 ladies who made their way to the start. After a down hill start it was Niamh Hughes (unaffilliated) and Elaine Connor (unaffilliated) who opened up a gap, with Gemma Whitehouse (Acorns AC), Cheryl Cardwell and Laura Mitchell Treanor, both of Sperrin Harriers, chasing them as the ladies made their way around the lakes between the 1K and 3K distance. After a steady climb between 3K and 4K, it was a welcome down hill all the way to the finish.

The 2019 winner was Niamh Hughes, who crossed the line in a very respectable 20:17, closely followed by Elaine Connor who completed in 20:26, and third home was Gemma Whitehouse who crossed the line in 21:13. Laura Mitchell Treanor of host club Sperrin Harriers was fourth in a time of 21:56, and took first prize in the 18-29 category. Ilze Pastare (Acorns AC) was fifth in a time of 22:12 and first in the 30-39 category, while in the 40-49 category it was club mate Marsha Abbott who picked up first prize with a time of 22:42. The always impressive Linda Pettigrew of Ballymena Runners AC claimed first prize in the 50-59 category finishing in 23:22 and Catherine O’Neill (Brackaville Runners) finished in 33:26 to claim the first prize in the 60+ category. In the Junior category 15-17, it was the host club’s Hannah Glasgow who crossed first in 24:02.

Well done to all in completing and congratulations to all the prize winners, including overall team winners Acorns AC.

Sperrin Harriers wishes to thank all those club members and friends of the club, who helped in staging the event. Particular thanks goes also to the Forest Service for the use of the scenic Drum Manor, Emergency Medical Services for their medical cover, to the photographers on the course, to those who provided the timing and results, and of course to our race sponsor Steelweld Fabrications for their generous support.

Murphy Top Girl at Stunnerz N Runnerz

Julie Murphy of Lagan Valley put in a fine performance to win the eighth Stunnerz N Runnerz. Almost 200 athletes toed the line in a strong field of runners and right from the off Murphy set the pace ahead of Elaine Connor of Derry Track Club and Leanne Sands (Acorns AC). At the half way mark, despite the extremely warm conditions, it was still Murphy who had control of the race and as she headed back for home strengthened her lead to break the tape in a marvellous time of 32.46, given the sweltering heat. Next home was Elaine Connor in an equally impressive time of 33.05, and third spot was claimed by Leanne Sands in a great time of 33.49.

Well done to all in completing and congratulations to all the prize winners, including overall team winners Acorns AC.

Background Information

To acknowledge the number of females pounding the pavements of Mid-Ulster on their own, the club would like to give these ladies the opportunity to test themselves in an official timed environment, it is also a chance for those less serious about running a ‘Personal Best’ to cover an established five-mile course without the interference of male competitors and in the company of their friends.

* Mid-Ulster’s first female-only five mile race- a chance for women to cover an established five-mile course without the interference of male competitors and in the company of their friends.

* Opportunity for local women to participate in a race and challenge themselves to work towards a fitness milestone.
* For more experienced runners, this maybe winning/setting a PB time, for those new to running, it is an opportunity to gain confidence.
* For less experienced exercisers or those who do not partake in much activity(70% women in N.I) it is encouragement to become involved in the event, with an opportunity afterwards to see what’s in the area for women to improve their fitness – local fitness clubs will be displaying information about the programme of activities they provide’

It is to be a tremendous occasion in Magherafelt with much activity planned for race day to accompany this unique fitness event.
