Harriers Enjoy an Eventful Week

Sperrin Harriers attended the Spar Craic 10k on Thursday, along with the Larne 10M on Saturday. Members also found success in a variety of Parkruns at the weekend.

Spar Craic 10k

St Patrick’s Day saw 1748 runners return to the streets of Belfast for the seventh year of the high profile SPAR Craic 10k road race. The event began at the City Hall and ended at Ormeau Park, with a proportion of the proceeds going to the Marie Curie charity.

Harrier Andrew Newell had a tremendous run to complete in 35:40, placing 19th amongst the large and talented field. Many congratulations to Rachel Hughes who distinguished herself on registering a very impressive time of 43:03, even more notable as it marked her first competitive race. She was joined on the day by father Terry Hughes who had a strong run of his own to complete in 53:43.

Larne 10M and 5k

On a sunny Saturday Larne Athletic Club hosted the Larne 10M and 5k, which took place along the striking east coast of County Antrim. The 10M involved an out and back route which followed the Coast Road, including the famous Blackcave Tunnel, ultimately returning to finish just before the Larne Leisure Centre. The 5k followed similar roads on its own out and back course, starting in the Town Park and also finishing close to the Leisure Centre.

In the 10M three Harriers joined the field of 580, with Paul McLaughlin leading the group home against a strong headwind on the return leg in 1:04:58, followed by Richard Fox in 1:17:46, Damien Atkinson completing the day with a great new Personal Best of 1:22:11.

Dungannon Park Parkrun

A field of 62 Parkrunners saw Rachel Hughes follow her exploits from Thursday with another highly impressive performance at Dungannon, pairing a great course PB of 21:04 with a podium place as first lady overall. Malcolm McCullough followed in 21:56, pursued by Patsy Hughes in 24:45, Louise Kelly in 25:59, and Martin Donaghy in 27:50.

Sligo Parkrun

Many congratulations to Joanne Taggart who led the large turnout of 80 at Sligo to take a tremendous first overall in 21:21.

MUSA Parkrun, Cookstown

On Saturday a field of 69 attended the Cookstown course, Jason O’Neill bringing the Harriers home in 21:29, followed by Grainne O’Hagan in 24:59, with Amelia Corey and Tanya Quinn crossing the line together in 43:24.

Derrynoid Forest Parkrun
