It was a very merry Christmas for the Harriers this festive season as Boxing Day saw the club on the podium at the Brocagh Bay 10k and 5k, also performing well at the Greencastle 5 Mile Road Race.
Brocagh Bay 10k and 5k
On Boxing Day the village of Brocagh, on the western shore of Lough Neagh, played host to this popular multi distance event. The 270 runners in attendance enjoyed views of the Lough as they proceeded around the picturesque Brocagh area.
At the 10k distance Brian Taggart was outstanding, taking first overall with his formidable time of 35.26. Patsy Hughes followed in 48.22, with Martin Kolbohm crossing the line in 49.47.
Sperrin Harriers also had a highly successful 5k, Andrew Newell continuing to impress on finishing third overall in a tremendous 16.52, with Fred Devlin producing a fine performance to complete in 18.09. Congratulations also go to Joanne Taggart who distinguished herself on placing as third lady in a marvellous 21.17, followed by Charlie Taggart in 22.06 and Johnjoe Taggart in 26.05.
Greencastle 5 Mile
Also taking place on Boxing Day, a field of over 520 attended the 36th Greencastle 5 mile road race. Located at the village of Greencastle, Co. Tyrone, conditions were damp and cool with both runners and walkers facing the famous and much loved course, which as ever incorporated Greencastle’s notoriously testing hill in the closing stages.
Brendan Gildernew headed the Harrier contingent, completing the demanding route in an impressive 31.39. Paul McLaughlin crossed the line soon afterwards in 32.18, with Brian Bradley finishing in 35.15. Jason O’Neill continued the procession of Harriers in 37.20, followed by Tanya Quinn (39.05), Richard Fox (39.17), and Joanne Corey (45.18).
Sperrin Harriers Winter League
The Sperrin Harriers Winter League continues with the An Creagan 5 Mile on 8th January, kindly sponsored by Coagh Pharmacy. It consists of a course located outside Cookstown and provides a balance of undulating stretches with flat straights, which along with the sometimes uneven terrain represents a good test for every level of runner.
This is followed by the Drum Manor 10k on 29th January (Sponsored by TES); and Parkanaur 10M on 26th February (Sponsored by Oliver Corey Garages).
Further information and entries are available on the club website.
