Stanley Reid Memorial 5 mile Classic and Fun Run

The Sperrin Harriers ran a very successful race at MUSA on Saturday 5th August. This was one of the best races with well over 230 participants. The fun run took place at 11am and the young runners were not long until they were finished the mile long course and enjoying their hotdogs. The main race was scheduled for 12pm and we were delighted to welcome an excellent field of runners- from the elite to those running their very first five mile race. Stanley Reid and many of the original Cookstown Harriers would have been delighted to see such a mix of runners putting their toe to the start line. We were also delighted to have Aaron Kerr on the start line along with his mum and dad. He got proceedings off to a great start and was soon followed by the rest of the runners.

Kieran Kelly led from the outset and came home in 25.21 to break the course record. He was followed by Ricky Johnston and then previous winner of the Sperrin Harriers Winter Series, Aidan O’Hagan.

The ladies were well represented in this race and the top 3 female winners were:-

We would finally like to thank our main sponsor Henry Brothers.

Our other supporters were Mid Ulster Council, Oliver Corey Garages, Outsource Group, Dale Farm, J&K contracts, 24hr Mace Cookstown, MUSA, Loughry CAFRE, Gerard Glackin Music, Hutton’s Butchers and Betty’s Icecream.

Finally, the race would not have happened without the efforts of Race Director Mark Reid along with all the Sperrin Harriers volunteers.

Well done to our Sperrin Harriers who finished in podium places in the race and also to Damian Kelly, Patricia Boyle and Wendy McLean who had personal best runs. Also to Rebecca Morris who completed her first 5 mile race.

Everyone made their way back to MUSA after the race to enjoy some hotdogs and burgers courtesy of Hutton’s Butchers and followed this up with some delicious local icecream from Betty’s Icecream. Music was provided by Gerard Glackin and, all in all, a great day of running was enjoyed by everyone.
